New Then And Now:
#34 - Hi-Way 50 Motel

It's been a very long time since I've done any Then And Now articles. I think part of the problem is that I've wanted to do them right, so I haven't done any at all lately since I didn't feel they'd be up to my standard of quality.

I need to get over that. There's nothing wrong with a quick and dirty Then and Now, so I need to get over myself. Especially now that summer is here, and it is prime picture taking season around Carson City because all the trees are green. I only have a couple of months to get out there and rephotograph all these old pictures I have.

Today is the first of what I hope to be many upcoming Then and Now articles. I had this picture submitted to me at the WNHPC, and I had no idea where it was, what it was, what part of town it was in, if it was still standing, anything. It wasn't until a comment came in from Dwight Millard (of Millard Realty, and my boss about twelve years ago, even though he probably doesn't remember me) letting me know where it was. I schlepped down there to check it out, and wow have things changed. It's the same building, though. Check out the article to see what it is.

This story in the Appeal pointed me to another Then and Now book, this one on the Central Pacific Railroad. The website www.cpran.com has details and sample images from Lawrence K. Hersh's book The Central Pacific Railroad Across Nevada 1868 & 1997, currently in its second printing. It matches up photos of the Transcontinental Railroad in Northern Nevada taken by Alfred A. Hart in 1868 with modern-day photos of the same scenes. Looks like a good read.

Around Carson's Then And Now articles are listed in the "Things We Like" section of the Knight Citizen News Network. At the moment it's even mentioned on their homepage!

The KCNN calls itself a "self-help portal" that highlights citizen journalism and placeblog efforts around the country and tries to help folks build and grow these kinds of sites. It's good to see that the Then And Now section, which is probably one of my favorite parts of the site, is the one they picked to give some recognition to. It also makes me feel bad that I'm not writing more articles for it, but there's a whole boatload of procrastination issues at play there. I'll have to get back on it.
